FireMaster® systems for the offshore and petrochemical industry provide hydrocarbon and jet fire protection to structures and process equipment whilst also providing ancillary benefits such as low weight, good acoustic / thermal insulation and ease of installation.
The offshore and chemical process industries present one of the toughest environments for fire insulation systems. Hydrocarbon products burn faster and to a higher temperature than materials commonly found in buildings. Fire insulation materials used have to be high-temperature resistant and immune from “thermal shock”.
On offshore platforms, the risk of an explosion and subsequent hydrocarbon fire is well known following the Piper Alpha fire in 1988. Ignition of leaking gas under pressure results in an impinging jet fire with high velocity and heat flux. Fire insulation systems therefore have to be designed to resist high-temperature, blast overpressure and the high velocities of impinging flame.
FireMaster® Applications in Offshore Platforms, FPSO’s and Petrochemical plants
Bulkhead and Deck Insulation Systems
The design of many offshore platforms requires the provision large accommodation facilities. These require extensive fire, thermal and acoustic insulation. Excessive topside weight on an offshore platform can create large capital cost due to the need for a larger support structure or expensive lifting equipment. One of the largest weight saving opportunities identified for heavy topsides is the use of lighter insulation materials.
- On one project using FireMaster® lightweight fire insulation materials in place of heavier mineral wool, savings of more than 20 tonnes were identified.
- Our bulkhead and deck systems are certified with DNV for fire insulation from A15 up to H120 standard and also meet required thermal and acoustic insulation levels.
Process Equipment, Valve and Actuator Protection Systems
Process plant equipment such as process vessels, piping, flange connections, valves and actuators need to be fire insulated to maintain their structural integrity during a fire. Loss of integrity can cause leakage of hydrocarbons adding fuel load to an existing fire. In the case of an actuator, failure to shut down a critical process can cause a secondary fire and explosion.
Our FireMaster® range provides a variety of systems based on our 1200°C resistant FireMaster® Marine Plus insulation for protection of flanges, valves, actuators, piping and vessels against both hydrocarbon and jet fires.
The systems offer high levels of fire insulation with effective cost or low weight contribution.
Structural Steelwork fire protection
Load bearing structural elements on offshore platforms require protection against fire to prevent loss of strength. In buildings onshore a maximum steel temperature of 550°C is allowed but in offshore platforms, the maximum temperature is usually set at 400°C. When exposed to a hydrocarbon fire at 1100°C, the required thickness of insulation and topside weight contribution to meet this requirement can be very high. FireMaster® light weight systems offer a solution that minimises the weight contribution to the topsides and is also easy to apply.
FireMaster® blanket is type approved for cellulosic and hydrocarbon fire protection of structural steelwork. The flexible blanket easily wraps around structures and is ideal for use in living quarter and process modules, offering low weight combined with approval certification for a wide variety of critical temperatures from 150 °C upwards.
Instrument Cable Tray Protection
In chemical process plants, shutdown of the process is required to be carried out in a fire. Standards such as API 2218 require cables to maintain operation for 15 to 30 minutes in a hydrocarbon fuel fire.
The FireMaster® Cable Tray Wrap system is Factory Mutual approved for hydrocarbon pool fire protection of instrument control cable trays with many references of installations by major operators worldwide. The system features a single layer application of an encapsulated lightweight blanket, saving on installation time.
It is also easy to remove if extra cables are retrofitted.
